Summary

The celebratory, revealing, inspiring, and entertaining autobiography of the greatest manager in the history of British soccer   Over the past four years, Alex Ferguson has been reflecting on and jotting down the highlights of his extraordinary career, and here he reveals his amazing story as it unfolded, from his very early days in the tough shipyard areas of Govan。 Sir Alex announced his retirement as manager of Manchester United after 27 years in the role。 He has gone out in a blaze of glory, with United winning the Premier League for the 13th time, and he is widely considered to be the greatest manager in the history of British soccer。 Over the last quarter of a century there have been seismic changes at Manchester United, with the only constant element the quality of the manager's league-winning squad and United's run of success, which included winning the Champions League for a second time in 2008。 Sir Alex created a purposeful, but welcoming, and much envied culture at the club which has lasted the test of time。 He discusses managing these seismic changes, and the growth of Man U as a global sports power。 He shares the farewells to Roy Keane and David Beckham, describes the process of building a new Champions League side around Ronaldo and Rooney, and ruminates upon the great rivalries with Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and City。 He also shares his thoughts on the psychology of management, and his passions and interests outside the game。

Interesting particularly around Beckham and Keane's departure and the great teams that he built around Cantona, Beckham/Scholes and then Ronaldo/Rooney but probably only truly appreciated by Manchester United fans as it is pretty biased towards the team。 Easy to comment with the benefit of hindsight but if you believe this the likes of Phil Jones, Danny Welbeck and Nicky Powell were set to be world beaters and David Moyes was a fantastic manager (which he may prove to be but of West Ham, not Man Interesting particularly around Beckham and Keane's departure and the great teams that he built around Cantona, Beckham/Scholes and then Ronaldo/Rooney but probably only truly appreciated by Manchester United fans as it is pretty biased towards the team。 Easy to comment with the benefit of hindsight but if you believe this the likes of Phil Jones, Danny Welbeck and Nicky Powell were set to be world beaters and David Moyes was a fantastic manager (which he may prove to be but of West Ham, not Manchester United where he was given hardly any time or money especially compared to his higher profile successors)。 Obviously not a man to be messed with or cross but only he could get away with saying that United were on top for most of a match v City that they lost 6-1。 There is some pretty savage criticism of the likes of Rafa Benitez and Steven Gerrard as well, but I suppose that it sells more books! I would have liked to know more about Ferguson's time before United as manager of Aberdeen and as a player for Rangers etc but that is skimmed over to get to the Manchester United years, as I think that it was covered in an earlier book。 I may still read his book on Leadership as I have heard good things about that and it may give more insight into his success。 。。。more

Alex Ferguson, the man who now lecturers business leaders, academics and university lecturers。 This book is not just about football, but one of the best management books on the market。 In this book, Fergie talks a lot about the big characters in the team and how to manage them, get the best out of them and probably more importantly when to get rid of them。

Another fabulous autobiography by the remarkable Alex Ferguson。 As a non-Liverpool fan, some of this was tough reading。 Recalling of big games, the detail of their victories and championships。 But ultimately, it’s absolutely fantastic to read in such detail into the mind and mindset for such moments in his life and famous sporting history too。 What I enjoyed most about this book is how instead of going season to season, moment to Monet, he sort of flickers to people and moments per chapter。 It m Another fabulous autobiography by the remarkable Alex Ferguson。 As a non-Liverpool fan, some of this was tough reading。 Recalling of big games, the detail of their victories and championships。 But ultimately, it’s absolutely fantastic to read in such detail into the mind and mindset for such moments in his life and famous sporting history too。 What I enjoyed most about this book is how instead of going season to season, moment to Monet, he sort of flickers to people and moments per chapter。 It makes for quite interesting reading。 I love the chapters on Wenger, Liverpool, Ronaldo, Rooney, Keane, Ferdinand, Class of 92, City winning the league, Mourinho and so on。 It’s great he puts so much information into each chapter rather than a brief mention within chapters。 He’s a really clever guy and that comes across massively within the book。 He doesn’t hold back either, which is great。 He talks big decisions through his career, a lot of ones that are more well known。 Goes into detail about disciplinary procedures he took and Ines against him and United by the likes of the FA。 A fantastic read。 A must buy。 。。。more

a tad disappointing。。。 I bought the book to get some insights about what made Alex Ferguson one of the greatest football managers of all time。 In particular, I was interested on how he approached the sport we love, in terms of tactics and management。 I must admit the book did not quite live up to my expectations as it felt more to me as a collection of stories and quick (though enjoyable) player portraits, rather than a thorough analysis of the game。 The few interesting management-wise bits I ca a tad disappointing。。。 I bought the book to get some insights about what made Alex Ferguson one of the greatest football managers of all time。 In particular, I was interested on how he approached the sport we love, in terms of tactics and management。 I must admit the book did not quite live up to my expectations as it felt more to me as a collection of stories and quick (though enjoyable) player portraits, rather than a thorough analysis of the game。 The few interesting management-wise bits I can take out from the book are:- a manager has to be the boss at a football club。 This idea resonates well considering how football has evolved into a star-driven business where managers are less powerful than players。- a manager needs to be versatile。 For example, handling the press and knowing how to communicate with owners are key nowadays。- a manager has to make players have faith in him and his decisions。Enjoyable read though! It was nice to travel back in time to some great football moments! 。。。more

Being a Manchester United supporter and a huge fan of Sir Alex Ferguson (SAF), this book has been in my to-read list for a long time。I'm so happy that I finally got around reading it。 Apart from getting the inside scoop of the many events that unfolded in his career, you also get a fair bit of understanding of his management plus the rationale behind his major decisions。 Though it did feel at times that certain events/things have been watered-down/sugar-coated but SAF, having had such a long and Being a Manchester United supporter and a huge fan of Sir Alex Ferguson (SAF), this book has been in my to-read list for a long time。I'm so happy that I finally got around reading it。 Apart from getting the inside scoop of the many events that unfolded in his career, you also get a fair bit of understanding of his management plus the rationale behind his major decisions。 Though it did feel at times that certain events/things have been watered-down/sugar-coated but SAF, having had such a long and illustrious career, doesn't exactly need controversies to keep it interesting。 A great read。 Will highly recommend to all football fans 👍🏼 。。。more

This was a really interesting look into Sir Alex Ferguson’s career, with a particular focus on his incredibly successful 26+ years as manager of Manchester United。 Whether you’re a fan of Man U or not - I’m not - this book is worth reading。 Fergie talks about the controversies, the characters, and the methods he employed at the club。

Easy read; interesting at times; but not a lot of depth。

I didn't learn much about football, but I did learn Alex Ferguson is hugely, almost ominously interested in the assassination of J。F。K。 Light enough read after the heavy books I ploughed through in May。 Decent stuff, quick read, but starts to get very repetitive despite how varied a career Ferguson had as both a player and a manager。 Splitting chapters into themes, rather than a timeline, is the death knell for this one。 I didn't learn much about football, but I did learn Alex Ferguson is hugely, almost ominously interested in the assassination of J。F。K。 Light enough read after the heavy books I ploughed through in May。 Decent stuff, quick read, but starts to get very repetitive despite how varied a career Ferguson had as both a player and a manager。 Splitting chapters into themes, rather than a timeline, is the death knell for this one。 。。。more

SAF was great, no doubt about that and the book took us through his journey to establish that。 But reading it now, with 2021 in perspective, all the prophecies seems to have failed。 Cleverly & Welbeck being on par with Thiago, Evans & Smalling emulating the great Vidic-Ferdinand partnership & many more like that。 I suppose if he would would have stayed, ManU would have easily won another couple of titles but that's not how it works。 He left the team in the worst possible space, RVP is the perfec SAF was great, no doubt about that and the book took us through his journey to establish that。 But reading it now, with 2021 in perspective, all the prophecies seems to have failed。 Cleverly & Welbeck being on par with Thiago, Evans & Smalling emulating the great Vidic-Ferdinand partnership & many more like that。 I suppose if he would would have stayed, ManU would have easily won another couple of titles but that's not how it works。 He left the team in the worst possible space, RVP is the perfect example for that。 He was brought on just to clinch that elusive 20th。 Don't want to delve much into all this。 SAF was maybe the last Old School manager we had wherein the Manager was the boss of the club。 The frequent bustups between Mourinho & the dressing rooms at Chelsea, ManU and Tottenham tells us that what SAF was able to do for so long seems impossible to emulate now! 。。。more

As a Man City fan, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did。 Probably why I completed it so quickly, was great to get his insight and to see how he holds himself responsible when some managers wouldn’t do so。

The book teachers a lot about management and leadership, anyone in a leadership position can take not here on how to inspire, build trust and belief and most importantly about how the mission / core values should never be traded in favour of an individual。 The team comes first。

I enjoyed reading it because of the subject matter, but the structure was a bit all over the place and the ending very abrupt。

Football is not my thing but I read this as a part of my job。 AF did provide some great insights into the job of a manager and the psychology behind football。 Enjoyed these aspects but it was mostly discussing previous matches which I clearly had no idea about but that’s not his fault。 ⭐️⭐️ = Enjoyed some aspects but not for me
